How long have locksmiths been around?

Locksmithing is one of the oldest professions in the world, the history of locksmithing, in fact, dates back to around 4,000 years ago.

It is believed that the profession of locksmithing began in Ancient Egypt, about 40 centuries ago. It was during this time that locksmiths crafted one of the first versions of the lock that we use today.

Early locks were made out of wood and would use pins of varying lengths to help stop the lock from opening without the correct key.

To move these pins you would need to insert a rather large wooden key, which would push the pins upward and release the lock.

Initially, these wooden devices were used to protect valuable goods from travelling thieves, who were well known for attempting to steal along ancient well-used travel routes.

As time moved on, into the 15th century, the design of the keys themselves started becoming more and more important. This meant Locksmiths not only had to ensure locks and keys were secure but also create intricate and ornate designs.

Locksmithing has always been a challenging profession, with lots of aspects to consider. For some, it was even a dangerous position!

In parts of Europe, during this time, being a locksmith even came with the possibility of being hanged. For example, in France, there were specific draconic rules written in particular guidebooks for the trade.

One French guild would only allow locksmiths to work during the day and, when crafting a key, the person who commissioned the key and the owner of the lock, had to be present in the locksmith’s place of work.
